PLAYTIME!                                                                                                                                  Video Link
     .....

  • Welcome to the playground!   Here we can play with CardiffSchools.Net (CSN) and Moodle (Ver.1.8) in a safe manner.

Manuel For the purpose of this site we are going to assume you 'know nothing' and the training here will take you through CSN and Moodle from the perspective of a student, a teacher, an administrator and even a parent!

Moodle is a Course Management System (CMS) an element of "e-learning" used inside CardiffSchools.Net  It could also be called a VLS Virtual Learning System or VLE Virtual Learning Environment.  Whatever it is called, it is a powerful package and well worth some study.

There are two very important elements implicit in this system. The first is that Moodle is based on Social Constructionist Pedagogy - which is 'learning by doing' and interacting with others doing the same.  It's the difference between a formal lecture and a tutorial.  'Talked at' versus 'discussion'.  The second element is openness.  We like to interpret openness in its widest sense here.  Open in so far as Moodle is "Open Source" (no charge software),  'open' in so far as learning may not be a linear activity - get used to hopping around all over the place and finally 'open' in that once you design courses leave the material 'open' for other to use, modify and redistribute.  We all benefit from sharing!  Oh, and one last point - we do not expect you to have to pay for any software used in the course of these courses.  All downloads should be free i.e.  Adobe Reader, Flash, Real Player, Moodle, Open Office,  .....

Real Video LinkThis site will be based on video content. You will need a copy of Real Video to see the content correctly.  Real Video can be downloaded and installed for free by carefully following this link.  A full list of other software will be provided here.

We have set ourselves a real task here - how to teach a learning system INSIDE the learning system itself.  We have already said that these pages are for willing learners (and you must be you are still here after us mentioning 'social constructionist pedagogy') and we can already assume that you know how to navigate the web and use a browser.  Otherwise we will assume that everything is new.

Below is a list of the currently available courses but before we head onwards - please spend a little time registering, if you have not done so already.  These courses cannot be seen, or used effectively, otherwise.

Available Courses

Here we look at the elements Moodle offers - from simple static pages, dynamic action features and full social interaction events.  The course is intended for the REAL beginner   START HERE!!  Whether student, teacher admin or parent.  It show Moodle from the students perspective.  At the end of this course teachers and administrators should have built a list of features that they want to know how to implement in their own courses.

Inflamed with creative spirit, burning with enthusiasm, armed with skills from Part One, we sally forth with our beacon of education shining bright to bring the light of learning to every dark corner of this ignorant and ill-educated world.

Part Three.  Part One introduced Moodle functions.  Part Two explained how the functions were controlled.  In this part we now promote you to the heady status of 'course creator' to give you first hand experience of adding activities and resources.  At the end of this module you will be able to design and establish your own course from all of the elementary functions.

Intermediate Moodle follows Introduction to Moodle with a kind of prescience that you may become familiar with as you move throught this site.

Introduction to Moodle was designed as a rather dry, step-by-step demonstration to individual Moodle functions from the students point of view.  It developed to explain how each of the functions was controlled and finally, in Part Three, provided a real environment, 'the sandpit', toplay in.

Here we look at the more adanced features available to teachers.

What is this site really about
by Admin User - Wednesday, 2 May 2007, 08:25 AM

This site is my attempt to do two things :-

  i) use Moodle to teach the use of CardiffSchools.Net and Moodle (reflexive stuff!) and

ii) to look at the problems of overlaying/integrating a video help system

Moodle is broken down into introduction, intermediate and advanced courses and is built on, and about, the out-of-the-box Version 1.8.  The content is very 'mechanistic' i.e. it teaches you how to use the basic blocks.  Although it offers advice as to how to confine the technology to keep the design tight, use the right types of files and get a feel for the content/download compromise it does not try to teach HOW TO teach using e-learning.

I'd value your comments on each of the sections.  (Please note this is a work in progress May 2007).

This is a second discussion area - also called a 'topic'.

Please leave your further comments after looking around and getting the 'feel' of what is going on here.  What do you like/dislike?  What could be improved?  Did you discover any bugs?

Welcome to the playground.  This is the main news area for the site.  Its April 2007 and the builders have yet to arrive so we will have to assemble here in this muddy patch for our site discussions.

Until the classrooms are built, keen students are arriving here to find out what is going on (it is the first block in the top left hand side of the opening page).  Just come up and introduce yourselves, ask questions ..... no need to be shy.

As you move around you should find that every course will have an area like this - a general news area.

Whilst you are here have a quick look at the top of the screen.  On the left is what is a navigation aid known as a "breadcrumb trail".

It charts your course and allows you to jump between levels.  An alternative method is shown at the top righthand side of the screen.  Where a "pull-down" box can be used to jump.  Enter a search term or two into the 'Search forums' box to reveal the power of the search facility in this area.

Reply at the base of this page is your opportunity to continue this conversation.  Click reply and let us know what your first impressions of this sytem are.
